Ancient Greek word meaning: female servant. Modern definition: a woman experienced in childbirth who provides advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother and her family before, during, and just after childbirth.
Throughout the ages women have supported women in labor. A doula's role is to provide continuous support throughout labor. A doula's primary task is to create a safe environment for mom while modeling effective comfort measures for the dad/partner. In doing so, the doula helps raise the partner's confidence in their support of mom, and in turn, mom's confidence and trust in them.
